What A Friend We Have in Jesus

Updated: Nov 2, 2019

Something beautiful happened yesterday.

Recently, I have been reading the book, "90 Minutes in Heaven" as a source of encouragement. It is about a man named Don Piper who died for 90 minutes, experienced Heaven, and came back to life. He gives the readers a sense of hope through his descriptions of miracles, genuine thoughts amidst the great pain that he endured throughout his recovery, and the numerous god-winks that took place in his life.

However, there is one song in particular that stood out to me in his book: What A Friend We Have In Jesus. It was the very song that a man was singing and praying over Don when he was dead, and the same song that Don sang along to with him when he came back to life.

I found myself looking up the lyrics, listening to it on Youtube, and loving this truth:

What a friend we have in Jesus all our sins and grieves to bear What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer Oh what peace we often forfeit of what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer

As I was folding clothes at work, a musician came into the assisted living center to sing and play guitar for my residents. The first song he sang was What A Friend We Have In Jesus.

I stopped folding and allowed myself to be in awe.

I've recently learned that God reveals Himself to us when we don't just have faith, but we truly believe. When we look for Him and listen for Him.

Better yet, beyond this early life where our praises seem to be weighed down by the weight of our sins, Don says of heaven: "Many of the old hymns and choruses I had sung at various times in my life were part of the music -- along with hundreds of songs I've never heard before. Hymns of praise, modern sounding choruses, and ancient chants filled my ears and brought not only a deep peace but the greatest feeling of joy I've ever experienced. I saw colors I would have never believed existed. I've never, ever felt more alive than I did then."

Let's look for God now, while we long for the life to come.
